History & Significance

Dartmouth was the key Royalist port controlling access to the Dart estuary. Fairfax stormed it in a night attack; the castle fell when the defenders in the harbour fort surrendered. Its capture denied the Royalists their last usable Devon port and cut off the remaining Royalist forces in Cornwall.
