Perth served as a contested strategic centre during the Montrose campaigns of 1645. The town changed hands as Royalist and Covenanting forces alternated control of central Scotland. Covenanting garrisons in Perth faced repeated Royalist pressure and conducted sorties against Royalist foraging parties in Perthshire. After Kilsyth in August 1645 the city fell to Montrose again.
