The Battle

History & Significance

After the collapse of his army at Coldstream, Lambert made one final attempt to organise republican resistance. He escaped from the Tower in April 1660 and tried to raise troops at Edgehill and in Northamptonshire. Intercepted at Daventry, his small force was scattered without serious fighting. Lambert was captured and imprisoned. The episode illustrated that the republican cause was utterly exhausted; the vast majority of the army welcomed the Restoration. Lambert spent the rest of his life imprisoned on Guernsey.
