The Battle

History & Significance

When Ostorius Scapula ordered all tribes within the Roman province to be disarmed, the Iceni — who had been a client kingdom and thus theoretically exempt — rose in revolt. They occupied a fortified enclosure and were stormed by Roman auxiliary infantry (the legions being held in reserve as it was not a full military campaign). This first Iceni revolt was a precursor to Boudicca's much larger uprising fourteen years later.
