History & Significance

After the Battle of Tippermuir on 1 September 1644, Montrose pursued the routed Covenanting army toward Perth. The city surrendered and was occupied by Royalist forces, who briefly used it as a base. Montrose imposed a ransom on Perth to fund his campaign. The occupation lasted only a short time before Covenanting forces compelled him to withdraw northward.
