History & Significance

The MacLeans of Duart required a second, more coercive submission in 1614 when it became clear that the 1608 and 1609 agreements were not being implemented. A government force sailed to Mull and imposed direct supervision on the clan. MacLean was compelled to accept further reductions in his military retinue and to demonstrate compliance with the Statutes of Iona by establishing Protestant ministers in his territory. The 1614 final submission completed the transition of the MacLeans from autonomous military powers to crown-supervised gentry.
