The Battle

History & Significance

The Dobunni were internally divided — a pro-Roman western faction submitted voluntarily, while an eastern faction aligned with the Catuvellauni resisted. Tacitus notes that Aulus Plautius received the submission of part of the Dobunni. The tribal oppidum at Bagendon was one of the largest pre-Roman settlements in England; its abandonment and the subsequent foundation of Corinium Dobunnorum (Cirencester) reflected Roman reorganisation of the region.
