History & Significance

Owen Roe O'Neill, nephew of Hugh O'Neill and a veteran of the Spanish armies, commanded the Confederate Ulster army. His victory at Clones temporarily checked the Scottish Covenanter army in Ulster. O'Neill was reorganising the Ulster Irish army on continental European lines.
