The Battle

History & Significance

While Robert Bruce landed in Carrick, his brothers Thomas and Alexander attempted a diversionary landing at Loch Ryan with a force of men from Ireland. The Galloway lord Dougal McDowall — firmly pro-English — was waiting for them. Both Bruce brothers were captured and handed to Edward I, who had them drawn and hanged at Carlisle. It was a devastating blow to Bruce personally. He pressed on regardless, showing the iron determination that would eventually win him his kingdom.
