History & Significance

In January 1645 Montrose and MacColla descended unexpectedly on Inveraray, the capital of Clan Campbell, having marched through the mountains of Argyll in winter. The Marquess of Argyll fled by boat and his clansmen scattered. The town was occupied and plundered. It was a devastating psychological blow to the Campbell chief and demonstrated Montrose's ability to strike deep into enemy territory in winter.
