The Battle

History & Significance

Hereford was contested in 1138 as the Anarchy began to engulf the Welsh Marches. Geoffrey Talbot and other western magnates aligned with Empress Matilda used Hereford as a base, and Stephen moved against the city to assert royal authority in the Marches. The siege was part of Stephen's energetic but ultimately uncoordinated early campaign to reduce Matildine strongholds across England.
