The Battle

History & Significance

Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch — illegitimate son of Robert II and the most lawless magnate in Scotland — conducted devastating raids into the Lowlands throughout the 1390s. His burning of Elgin Cathedral in 1390 was the most notorious act, but his forces raided widely. His raids through Atholl and Perthshire represent the breakdown of royal authority in the Highlands.
