Overview

History & significance

Balnaguard settlements and field systems is a post-medieval archaeological complex situated approximately 1900 metres south of Balnaguard in Perthshire, Scotland. The monument comprises the remains of historic settlements and associated agricultural field systems, preserving evidence of rural land use and habitation practices from the period following the medieval era. The site is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM5320.

The landscape in which Balnaguard is situated rests upon bedrock of the Southern Highland Group, composed of psammite and pelite formations that date from the Middle Cambrian period. This underlying geology, with its mixture of sandy and clay-rich metamorphic rocks, has influenced both the drainage patterns and agricultural potential of the surrounding terrain. Such geological foundations are characteristic of the upland Perthshire landscape and would have shaped decisions about settlement placement and field organisation during the post-medieval period.

The field systems and settlement remains at Balnaguard represent the material expression of rural community life during the centuries following the early modern transition. The combination of settlement sites and their contemporary field layouts provides evidence for understanding historic agriculture, land tenure and domestic organisation in this region of central Scotland.
