The Battle

History & Significance

Royalist forces advancing from Lincolnshire attempted to take Stamford from Parliamentary control in the summer of 1643. Parliamentary defenders and Eastern Association cavalry from Peterborough repulsed the Royalist advance after fighting in the approaches to the town. The defence of Stamford secured the Great North Road crossing of the Welland for Parliament.
