History & Significance

After Lambert victory at Inverkeithing cut the Scottish communications Monck besieged Stirling Castle; the governor surrendered after minimal resistance when Parliamentary artillery opened fire; the fall of Stirling effectively completed the Parliamentary conquest of lowland Scotland while Charles II marched south to his doom at Worcester.
