History & Significance

So many priests and monks died at Myton that it was mockingly called the 'Chapter of Myton'. The disaster forced Edward II to abandon his siege of Berwick to protect his own kingdom. The battle demonstrated that Scotland could threaten the English heartland with impunity while Edward II besieged Berwick
