History & Significance

General Middleton arrived in Scotland in 1654 to command the Glencairn Rising but proved unable to transform it into an effective military force. Inter-clan feuding weakened the royalist coalition. Monck's methodical advance into the Highlands in 1654 cornered the royalist force, which dispersed without a decisive engagement. Middleton escaped to the Continent and the Glencairn Rising petered out, the last significant royalist military effort in Scotland before the Restoration.
