The Battle

History & Significance

Faversham was seized by Kentish Royalists during the 1648 rising. The town on the Swale controlled access to the Isle of Sheppey and communications along the north Kent coast. Royalist possession threatened Parliamentary control of the county and encouraged the naval mutiny in the Downs.
