The Battle

History & Significance

Montrose and Alasdair MacColla descended on Inveraray — the Campbell capital — in December 1644, arriving so suddenly that the Earl of Argyll fled by boat before they arrived. MacColla's MacDonald troops plundered the town with particular savagery — this was clan revenge as much as a military operation. The humiliation of Argyll was complete.
