History & Significance

Following the settlement with Owain Gwynedd in north Wales, Henry II forces Lord Rhys to surrender the Ceredigion castles he had retaken. Rhys is compelled to do homage and return the fortifications to English control. The humiliation deepens Rhys resentment and eventually fuels his later rebellion, but shows English power at its height in Wales.
