History & Significance

Tamworth Castle controlled the crossing of the River Tame on the Staffordshire-Warwickshire border. Parliament took it in 1643 and used it as a forward base for operations against the Royalist Midlands. Its possession helped link Parliamentary forces in Warwickshire with those in Derbyshire.
