The Battle

History & Significance

The Scots crossed the Tyne in January 1644 and besieged Newcastle for nine months. After Marston Moor the garrison was isolated. Leven's Scots stormed the town in October; the mayor was reportedly captured still seated at his dinner table. Newcastle's fall cut Royalist coal revenue and allowed the Scots to communicate freely with Parliament.
