History & Significance

The Second Civil War of 1648 saw a Royalist and Presbyterian rising in Lincolnshire that was defeated at Willoughby Field by Colonel Edward Rossiter's Parliamentary cavalry. The rising was part of the co-ordinated Second Civil War risings that occurred across England simultaneously. Its rapid suppression in Lincolnshire prevented the rising from linking up with the larger Scottish invasion. The victory was one of several regional Parliamentary successes that contained the Second Civil War.
