History & Significance

Glen Cannich, running west from Strathglass toward Kintail, was one of the remoter glens swept by government columns after Culloden. A government forage party sent to drive cattle from a township deep in the glen was ambushed by armed Jacobite survivors who killed the party's officer and took the soldiers prisoner. The prisoners were subsequently released but the incident demonstrated the continued danger to small government detachments operating in the deep glens without adequate escort. This and similar incidents forced government commanders to use larger columns for sweeping operations.
