Part of James II's campaign to break the power of the Black Douglases. The Earl of Crawford — a Douglas ally known as the "Tiger Earl" — was defeated. Combined with James II's personal murder of the Douglas earl, this battle marked a turning point in the crown's long struggle with the most powerful noble family in Scotland.
