The Battle

History & Significance

While William the Lion was held prisoner in England after his capture at Alnwick, Galloway took the opportunity to revolt under its lord Gilbert, son of Fergus. The revolt was savage -- Gilbert had his brother Uhtred, who was loyal to William, murdered by mutilation. The rising demonstrated the persistent problem of Galwegian independence and the weakness of Scottish central authority when the king himself was captive abroad.
