History & Significance

Hungerford in Berkshire was used as a Parliamentary outpost in 1644 during the manoeuvres preceding and following the Second Battle of Newbury. The town commanded a crossing of the Kennet between Marlborough and Newbury and was used by Parliamentary cavalry as a base for screening the approaches from the west.
