The Battle

History & Significance

The Duke of Albany and Richard of Gloucester (the future Richard III) jointly took Berwick as part of their deal — Albany traded Berwick to the English in exchange for support for his claim to the Scottish throne. The surrender of Berwick in 1482 was permanent — it has remained English ever since, despite multiple Scottish attempts to recover it. The town has changed hands no fewer than thirteen times in its history; 1482 was the last change.
