Wem in Shropshire — near the Welsh border and gateway to north Wales — was a Parliamentary enclave in a strongly Royalist region. It was attacked by Royalist forces from Wales multiple times in 1643. The town's successful resistance, including a famous defence supposedly led partly by women, helped secure the north Welsh border corridor for Parliament.
