History & Significance

Brechin Castle, an important episcopal stronghold in Angus, submitted during Edward I's northern march through Scotland in July 1296. The submission of Brechin along with other Angus fortifications formed part of the systematic garrisoning of Scotland that Edward conducted after the Ragman Roll submissions, converting Scottish royal castles into English administrative centres and military outposts.
