In the weeks before the Battle of Cromdale, Buchan's Jacobite Highland army was concentrated in Badenoch and lower Strathspey. Government parties from Inverness probed south toward the Jacobite camp. An advance party skirmish occurred near Ruthven in Badenoch as government scouts encountered Jacobite outposts. This preliminary skirmishing was reconnaissance in force — both sides seeking to locate the other's main body before the decisive engagement. The Jacobites were unaware that Livingstone's dragoons were making a careful night approach for the dawn surprise attack at Cromdale that would end the rising.
