The Battle

History & Significance

Charles I's last battlefield victory. Waller's army was caught crossing the Cherwell at Cropredy Bridge and his rear was attacked. Parliamentary artillery was captured and the army demoralised. Waller complained bitterly to Parliament that he could not fight with an army of such poor quality — his letter triggered the Self-Denying Ordinance.
