History & Significance

Campbell forces under Sir John Campbell of Calder conducted a major military raid into Islay in 1612, two years before the final taking of Dunnyveg Castle, as part of the systematic Campbell displacement of the MacDonalds from the island. The raid destroyed several MacDonald townships, seized cattle, and intimidated the MacDonald tenantry into accepting Campbell authority. Government commissioners provided legal cover for the operation. The 1612 raid was the largest single Campbell military operation in Islay before 1614 and effectively broke the MacDonalds' ability to defend their island holdings.
