The Kintyre peninsula — long contested between MacDonald and Campbell — was subjected to systematic government pacification between 1605 and 1610 as part of the broader Hebridean policy. The Campbells, acting as government agents, moved into Kintyre and displaced or subordinated the remaining MacDonald tenantry. James VI granted Kintyre to the Earl of Argyll in 1607, completing the legal basis for Campbell dominance. Government forces backed Campbell possession by intimidating MacDonald resistance. By 1610 Kintyre was effectively Campbell territory, ending centuries of MacDonald occupation of the peninsula.
