History & Significance

After the Battle of Cromdale in May 1690 — where Colonel Livingstone's dragoons routed the Jacobite Highland army in a dawn surprise attack — government cavalry pursued fleeing Highlanders into Strathspey and the Grant country. Individual clan leaders were killed or captured. Cannon, the Jacobite commander, escaped but the organised military resistance of the 1689-90 rising was finished. General Mackay subsequently built Fort William permanently and began the infrastructure of Highland pacification.
