History & Significance

During the initial outbreak of the 1641 Rebellion, Ulster rebels under Sir Phelim O'Neill besieged Drogheda but failed to take it. The town's survival was important in limiting the initial rebel advance. The 1641 massacres of Protestant settlers in Ulster caused outrage in England and Scotland and led to the deployment of Parliamentary and Scottish Covenanter armies in Ireland.
