History & Significance

The security of the Thames estuary from Royalist naval incursion was a constant concern for Parliament in 1642-43. Royalist ships from the King's fleet occasionally appeared in the estuary and threatened the supply lines keeping London fed. Parliamentary forces established garrisons at Gravesend and other estuary points to secure the approaches to London from the sea.
