The Battle

History & Significance

In the final decade of Roman Britain, Saxon and Frankish raids escalated dramatically. The Saxon Shore forts — Portchester, Richborough, Reculver, Bradwell, Brancaster and others — continued to function but without the imperial fleet and army to back them, their garrison forces were increasingly on their own. Archaeological evidence suggests some forts were reused by local British populations for decades after the formal end of Roman rule.
