The Battle

History & Significance

In his second full campaign season Agricola advanced north of the Humber, consolidating Brigantian subjugation and pushing to the Solway-Tyne line. He established new forts and rebuilt existing ones. Tacitus describes his policy of cultural transformation — encouraging tribal leaders to build temples, fora, and houses in the Roman fashion. Humanitas — making the British desire Roman things — was subtler than conquest by arms alone.

Forces Involved

Full provincial army including Legio IX and auxiliary regiments; considerable engineering force
