The Battle

History & Significance

Before Lewes, Henry III stormed Northampton held by Simon de Montfort junior. A friar opened a postern gate to royalist forces. The assault was vigorous and the town and castle fell with significant baronial losses. Simon junior was captured along with many knights. The fall of Northampton was Henry III's last military success before the catastrophe of Lewes. It gave the royalists false confidence that they could deal with de Montfort easily.
