The Battle

History & Significance

Two days after the sack of Welshpool (23 September 1400), an English force from Shrewsbury under Hugh Burnell caught and dispersed Glyndŵr's men near the River Vyrnwy. Owain "escaped into the woods." This brought the first episode of the rising to a close. English commanders reported confidence that the rebellion was finished — they were completely wrong. Owain regrouped and the rebellion grew dramatically.
