The Battle

History & Significance

The Parliament at Lincoln in 1301 was a major military-political event. Scottish nobles submitted petitions and English barons submitted the Barons Letter defending English claims to Scotland against papal intervention. Edward organized his northern forces here and conferred the Chester earldom. The parliament was also the venue where Scottish attempts to use the papacy to escape English overlordship were definitively rejected with armed backing.
