The Battle

History & Significance

The Scotch Cattle were a secret society of ironworkers and miners in Monmouthshire who used intimidation and violence against workers accepting below-standard wages or informing on union activity. From around 1822 the Hereford Bull leader and his Cattle conducted nocturnal raids, wrecking houses and beating blacklegs.
