The Campbell seizure of Dunoon Castle on the Cowal peninsula established their control of the Firth of Clyde approaches to Argyll. Dunoon was one of the key strategic castles of Argyll commanding the entry to the Holy Loch and the western Clyde. Campbell control of Dunoon gave them effective authority over the movement of ships into the Argyll sea-lochs and set the stage for their eventual dominance of all Cowal.
