The Battle

History & Significance

Tacitus notes that the British initially avoided pitched battle after the landing, preferring to lure the Romans into swamps and forests. Scattered resistance along the river lines of Kent was brushed aside as Plautius advanced toward the Medway. The Cantii tribe offered limited resistance — they had already had contact with Rome through trade.
