History & Significance

Major-General John Lambert — a Yorkshireman — commanded Parliamentary forces in the north during both the First and Second Civil Wars. In 1647-1648 he suppressed Royalist conspiracies and the Second Civil War risings in Yorkshire with efficiency. His rapid movements prevented the scattered Royalist garrison at Pontefract from linking up with the Scottish-Engager army that invaded England under Hamilton. Lambert's actions in Yorkshire freed Cromwell to march north and defeat Hamilton at Preston.
