History & Significance

Alasdair MacColla conducted extensive raiding operations along the western coast of Scotland in 1645, attacking Campbell and Covenanting positions in Kintyre, Islay, Jura and the adjacent mainland. These operations combined military strategy with the prosecution of the MacDonalds ancient feud against the Campbells. MacColla devastated Campbell island territories and mainland holdings throughout the western seaboard.
