After escaping from the Tower of London in April 1660, Major-General Lambert attempted to raise republican forces on the symbolic ground of Edgehill, the first Civil War battlefield, hoping to attract old soldiers to resist the Restoration. His appeal found no response. The failure at Edgehill illustrated the complete collapse of republican sentiment in the army by spring 1660.
