The Battle

History & Significance

When both the Maeatae and Caledonians revolted in 210 AD, Severus ordered Caracalla to conduct a punitive expedition. Cassius Dio records the chilling order: let no one escape, not even babies in the womb. Caracalla was conducting this campaign when Severus died at York in February 211 AD. Caracalla immediately concluded peace and returned to Rome to secure his position.
