History & Significance

In the weeks following the Battle of Inverlochy in February 1645, Covenanting forces attempted to track and catch Montrose as he withdrew back into the central Highlands. These pursuit operations through the rough country of Lochaber, Badenoch and Strathspey resulted in several minor encounters. Montrose's Highland army was too mobile and too well adapted to winter conditions for the pursuing Covenanters.
